E-Mails

My emails have been really interesting lately; I’ve had several people write to me asking me about different Classic Nickelodeon programs. It’s so exciting. I know it sounds silly but every time I read a new email from someone asking about a show, well, some how it makes me feel important, like I’m making a difference in the world. It makes me feel like I’m giving this person back a small piece of their childhood. Like my bit of information is like helping them find that last piece of the puzzle. It’s exciting and humbling all at the same time.

And so far I’ve been able to answer every one of them, knock on wood lol and I hope that in the future when I receive more emails that I’ll be able to answer them as well.

So to all of you who read this blog and write to me thank you, you have made me feel as if I’m really on the right track for my life. Yes I know that you may not understand that but trust me, I am so thankful to every one of you. Thank you.

Oh and on a side note I have four new members to my Classic Nickelodeon Yahoo group yay!!!

Cool News! ~ Fan Meet Stuff

The other day while my Mom and I were out running errands we stopped by one of the local newspaper offices to pick up a few copies of last weeks issue. (Friend in the newspaper, saving it for his scrapbook thing, you know.)

Anyway we got talking to the owner and I told him that about the fan meet and asked if they would do a story on it and he said yes. Then he went on to tell me that not only do they have the paper here in Altus but they also run seven or eight other papers as well and when I email him the information if I remind him he’ll run it in all eight papers to all the little towns around here!!!!!!!!!!!!! HOW COOL IS THAT?!?!?!!? I’m going to have more advertising than I expected!!!

Oh my gosh I'm so excited, I just bought 15 episodes of "Out of Control" on iOffer!!! So that's one more show I can add to the playlist for the fan meet!

I've decided that since I do have so many of these classics on video and DVD that I'm going to make one video tape (or DVD if I can find the instructions) of all the old shows for the fan meet.

What I thought would be to use one of my old TV guide schedules and copy it as closely as possible with what I have. For example have one hour of Pinwheel followed by Today's Special and Vegetable Soup and so forth. So in a way I'll be recreating (as much as possible) a full day of Classic Nickelodeon programs for us to enjoy so I hope that everyone, or at least a lot of you, are making plans to be here for it!!!

The Adventures of Black Beauty was a British children's television drama series produced by London Weekend Television, shown on ITV in the United Kingdom and exported worldwide via London Weekend International between 1972 and 1974.

Two seasons were produced, the first airing from September 1972 to March 1973 and the second from September 1973 to March 1974. Although it was mainly aimed at children, it was shown in the Sunday teatime "family" timeslot and gained a wide audience, becoming popular enough to make the general Top 20 ratings. It was repeated regularly, although often on a regional basis, for many years, its last full repeat run being on Sunday mornings from 1986 to 1988. It also aired in the United States on Nickelodeon in the 1980s.

The series was not an adaptation of the book by Anna Sewell, but a "continuation" featuring new characters created by Ted Willis, most prominently Dr James Gordon, played by William Lucas, and his children Vicky, played by Judi Bowker (who became Jenny, played by Stacy Dorning, in the second series) and Kevin, played by Roderick Shaw. Other writers included David Butler and Richard Carpenter, while directors included Charles Crichton and Peter Duffell. The series, which was filmed mainly at Stockers Farm, Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, was widely acclaimed for its high production values and quality of writing and acting, and at times had remarkable "English gothic" overtones for a children's series.

The theme tune, "Galloping Home", written by Denis King and performed by the London String Chorale, was released as a single and peaked at number 31 in the UK charts in the week of February 2, 1974. It was later used at the climax of the first series of I'm Alan Partridge, with Alan dreaming of running through a field as Black Beauty does in the series' title sequence. The theme tune was also featured in the series Brainiac: Science Abuse. It actually has lyrics by Dick Vosburgh as revealed by Denis King at a memorial concert for Dick Vosburgh in July 2007.

The series, The New Adventures of Black Beauty (1990-91) was a continuation of the original 1970's series.

Home Video ReleasesA number of video releases over the years were superseded by two DVD releases, featuring selected episodes from both series, in 2001. Full series releases have been made in the United Kingdom and the United States

I’m sure that you’re all wondering why I’m posting a blog about Adam Ant under a Nickelodeon fan blog. I’m posting it b/c Nickelodeon had a program called “Nick Rocks Video To Go” where they use to show 80’s videos and they use to show Adam’s videos.

I’m also posting it b/c Nickelodeon also had a program called “Special Delivery” which aired a music concert called “Adam & The Ants: The Prince Charming Revue”. So God be with Adam.

Adam Ant Sectioned Under Mental Health Act Days After Screaming Abuse At Christians

Eighties pop star Adam Ant has been sectioned under the Mental Health Act, it was claimed this evening.

It follows a series of troubled public appearances, including a concert last week where he unleashed a tirade of abuse at Christians during a charity gig.

According to The Music Fix (TMF) website, Adam Ant sent a message to fans which said he had been admitted to hospital.

It read: 'Ant fans - please send me postcards at the Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, Fulham Road. Please don't come down here as it may upset the staff who have been really pleasant.

'I am having a well earned rest at Her Majesty's Pleasure and am painting and continuing being an art student. I have a great view and am considering gigs later in the year.'

The 55-year-old popstar has a troubled history and has a history of depression.

The Antmusic singer announced earlier this year he would go back on the road for the sake of his 12-year-old daughter Lily.

But his return was marred last week with an odd performance in Portsmouth.

On May 11, Adam, real name Stuart Goddard, was due to play a 30-minute set at the Oasis Centre to raise money for starving children in the Phillipines.

During the show, he invited a four-year-old boy up on stage and began to teach him the words to The Who's My Generation.

And when the frustrated crowd started to leave, he began screaming obscenities at them.

He even asked if there were any Christians in the room, and then told them to 'f**k off'.

Goddard was then booed off the stage before twins - who he referred to as 'his nieces' - Alex and Naomi Hewston, 22, got into a fight with promoter Nick Courtney's son Sam backstage.

He then returned to London on Saturday to perform with his live band at Paper Dresstival.

According to an Adam & The Ants fansite, Goddard, who has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, was sectioned after an incident on Tuesday evening.

In 2002, he threatened drinkers at a North London pub with an imitation pistol, but escaped a jail term on the grounds of mental illness.

And he was sectioned in September 2003 after a dispute with a neighbour where he threatened to smash in his patio doors with a shovel and was found lying naked in a cafe basement.

When he announced his comeback just weeks ago he told reporters that he had learned to live with manic depression.

The illness has caused him to be admit himself to hospital on several occasions.

But last month he said he would hit the road again for the sake of Lily, his only child and his ‘reason for living’.

‘She has never seen Adam perform and doesn’t know what The Ants were all about,’ he said.

'I’ve had this lifelong battle against manic depression, but I’ve had to overcome it for her sake. Times got bad. I lost my mind. But I’m back.’

NEW YORK — Ever wonder why Curious George is so curious? Or why the monkey hero of the "Curious George” children’s books is so fond of travel, so prone to mischief yet always narrowly escapes disaster?

A new exhibit at New York’s Jewish Museum suggests that curious readers need look no farther than the real-life adventures of the intrepid husband-and-wife team that created the beloved character.

H.A. and Margret Rey — he changed the name from Reyersbach — were German Jews living in Paris on the eve of the Nazi invasion, increasingly concerned about finding safe haven. Two days before the Germans marched into Paris, they fled on bicycles carrying drawings for their picture books, including one about a mischievous monkey then called Fifi.

Curator Claudia Nahson said Hans and Margret created the monkey character that is always on the run while they themselves were on the run. The recurring motif of the monkey’s narrow escape from danger is another autobiographical detail.

Twice in the months leading up to their escape, the couple were questioned by authorities suspicious of their German accents. Both times they were let off the hook when officials learned what they were doing: making children’s books.

While the exhibit touches on the harrowing conditions they endured on their four-month journey in 1940 from France to New York, it’s more about the unusually long and fertile artistic collaboration between Hans and Margret, whose fiery personality is said to be the inspiration for George’s insatiable curiosity and spunk.

Hans Rey was a gentle, pipe-smoking, self-taught artist who toiled for a time in commercial art designing circus posters before launching his career as a writer and illustrator of children’s books. Margarete Waldstein, who shortened her name to Margret, was the more assertive of the two. She had studied art and photography at the famed Bauhaus School in Germany and had strong opinions about nearly everything, including her husband’s work.

Both loved animals. Hans liked to sketch in zoos, and the couple kept pet marmosets in their apartment in Brazil in the 1930s. Margret even knitted sweaters to keep the monkeys warm on the couple’s cold ocean passage to Europe in 1936, but the creatures didn’t survive the voyage.

The exhibition features nearly 80 original drawings and vibrant watercolors for the more than 30 books the couple wrote and illustrated. The most famous, of course, is Curious George — the "good little monkey” captured in the wilds of Africa by a man in a large yellow hat and taken to the city to live in a zoo and later, the man’s home.

The idea for George began in an earlier book about a lonely giraffe named Raffy who befriends nine monkeys, the youngest of which is called Fifi. Eventually, the Reys decided to develop a story just about Fifi. It was one of the stories they brought from France, only to learn when they got to the U.S. that American publisher Houghton Mifflin had doubts about the name Fifi for a boy monkey.

So, Fifi became George in the United States — and Zozo in Britain. The "Curious George” books eventually were translated into many languages, selling tens of millions of copies worldwide.

It’s not hard to see why. With simple lines and bright, buoyant colors, the Reys created an imaginary world full of innocence and optimism.

Grant, I wish all of our members were as on fire as you are. If they were then there would be no stopping us; and actually make that 17, we have two new members today.

And as much as I hate to be a wet blanket on your enthusiasm I have to say that I don't want people to just go out and just invite anyone to join us. I want people here who love and remember Classic Nickelodeon like we do. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have over 100 members and I believe that we'll have them sooner than we think.

But remember I send out 50 invitations a day for people to join us and look how many we've had join. We've had 26 new people join this group since I started doing that. But what good will it be for us to reach 100 members if no one ever talks?

Yes a few of us do post regularly, but what about everyone else? As I said the other day we've got people on this list who have been here since almost the first day we opened and have never said a word. And to be flatly honest now is not the time to be so quiet we NEED to start talking about this fan meet and how many of you are planning on coming b/c I DON’T want to have to cancel it like I did last year.

I was going to save this for another email but I’ve already been on the phone with Dave Coulier’s agent about having him do his stand up act at the local college so that we, as the fan meet group, will be able to go see him for free as part of the weekend events. And I’ve been on the phone with the lady at the college about having them host the concert for us.

Marty Schiff, who also stared in “Out Of Control” with Dave, said that he wants to come and IF IF IF she says yes there is a chance that someone will be here with a few of the Pinwheel puppets!!!!!!!!! Do yall realize how huge that is??? THE PINWHEEL PUPPETS, that’s pretty huge.

Now of course at this point IDK if they will say yes or not but I’m going to call the lady back this week and find out. Just the other day I was at the store buying a few things for decorations for the room. And I’m also going to physically go to the hotel to talk to the guy in charge and see what banquette room they’re going to let us use and talk to him about all the arrangements SO NOW IS NOT THE TIME TO KEEP SILENT!!!

Please believe me when I tell you that there is not a day that goes by that I’m not thinking about this fan meet and worrying that no one will show up. I know the economy is bad, don’t even get me started, but yall said that if I planned this that you would be here for it come hell or high water. So that’s why I keep bring it up so that yall can start planning and saving your money NOW.

Oh by the way, did I tell you that the OFFICIAL DATE for the fan meet is October 1-3 so mark your calendars then help me pray that both the fan meet will be successful and that Dave’s concert will sell out b/c if they don’t I’m on the hook for it. And I don’t have $95 hundreds. Hell I don’t even have the money to pay for the banquette room and that’s only $200, that’s why this year I’ll have to sell tickets for it…….

Black Beauty Theme

Last night while watching "The Adventures of Black Beauty" I decided that I wanted to do a bit of reading about it so I Googled it and found out something very cool.

The beautiful theme song that opens and closes the show is called "Galloping Home". It was written by Dennis King and performed by the London String Chorale. Also it was released as a single and peaked at number 31 in the UK charts in the week of February 2, 1974.

And for those of you who have never seen season one of "The New Adventures of Black Beauty" I highly recommend it. Season one if the continuation of the 1970's version and features two of the characters from the original series, Dr James Gordon (played by William Lucas) and Jenny Gordon Denning (played by Stacy Dorning). In other words the original Doctor Gordon and the original Jenny Gordon who of course is now grown and married with a step daughter - her name? Victoria - Vicky of course.

The old and new series is out on Region 1 DVD and also airs on the faith based channel FamilyNet.

Art Clokey, Animator Who Created Gumby, Dies at 88

Art Clokey, the animator who half a century ago created Gumby, that most pliant of pop-cultural figures, died on Friday at his home in Los Osos, Calif. He was 88.

His son, Joe Clokey, said he died in his sleep.

Asparagus green and fashioned from clay, Gumby made his television debut in 1956 on “The Howdy Doody Show.” The next year, he became the star of “The Gumby Show,” in which he embarked on a string of gently quixotic adventures with his supple steed, Pokey. The series was one of the first extended uses of stop-motion animation on television.

Though the 1950s show was fairly short-lived, Gumby reappeared in new series in the 1960s and in the 1980s and continued for years in syndication. He also starred in a feature film, “Gumby: The Movie” (1995), directed by Mr. Clokey.

Gumby is now firmly ensconced in popular culture. He dangles from rearview mirrors, appears in video games and crops up ubiquitously in references in film and on television. Millions of Gumby dolls have submitted to their owners’ manipulations. The character has been satirized, notably by Eddie Murphy, who played him as a cigar-chomping vulgarian — “I’m Gumby, dammit!” — on “Saturday Night Live” in the 1980s.

With his first wife, Ruth, Mr. Clokey also produced “Davey and Goliath,” the adventures of a clay boy and his dog, broadcast in the 1960s and ’70s.

Mr. Clokey was the subject of a documentary film, “Gumby Dharma,” released in 2006.

Arthur Charles Farrington, as Mr. Clokey was first known, was born in Detroit on Oct. 12, 1921. After his parents divorced when he was about 8, he lived with his father; when Art was 9, his father was killed in an automobile accident. Rejoining his mother in California, the boy was banished by her new husband and placed in a children’s home.

At about 11, Art was adopted by Joseph Waddell Clokey, a well-known composer of sacred and secular music. By Art’s later account, Joseph Clokey was a loving father who opened up a world of books and culture.

Art Clokey earned a bachelor’s degree from Miami University in Ohio and later attended Hartford Seminary in Connecticut, intending to become an Episcopal priest. He left before graduating and settled in California, where he and Ruth planned to make religious films.

Entering the University of Southern California, Mr. Clokey studied with the modernist filmmaker Slavko Vorkapich. In 1955, he made a student film, “Gumbasia” — the title was a nod to “Fantasia” — in which clay shapes dance to a jazz soundtrack. (The film is included on the DVD “Gumby Essentials,” released in 2007 by Classic Media.)

Mr. Clokey created Gumby soon afterward. As he often said, Gumby’s asymmetrical head, resembling a rakish pompadour, was a tribute to his biological father’s prominent cowlick.

“The Gumby Show” had an undercurrent of tender, if slightly surreal, spirituality. (A lifelong seeker of enlightenment, Mr. Clokey tried LSD — but only once, under medical supervision and not till long after he created Gumby, his son said in a telephone interview on Sunday.)

“Davey and Goliath” was spiritual by design. Underwritten by what is now the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the series was meant to teach values like charity and tolerance.

Mr. Clokey’s first marriage, to the former Ruth Parkander, ended in divorce; his second wife, Gloria, died in 1998. In addition to his son, Joe, from his first marriage, he is survived by a stepdaughter, Holly Harman; a sister, Arlene Cline; a half-sister, Patricia Anderson; and three grandchildren. A daughter from his first marriage, Ann, died in 1974.

With the rise of slick, titillatingly violent cartoons in the 1970s, Gumby’s popularity waned. According to many published accounts, Mr. Clokey struggled financially. Then along came Mr. Murphy, and suddenly Gumby was everywhere.

Mr. Clokey adored Mr. Murphy’s performance, his son said. But he was also gratified that it was broadcast late at night, when no child was awake to see it.

Slime Bucket

Guess what I found out, Nickelodeon still makes toy slime!!! Last week I started watching this game show, on Nick, called “Brainsurge” and one of the prizes after the first round was a ‘bucket of slime’! I almost flipped out when I saw it. But now the problem is finding it somewhere around here. Naturally Walmart doesn’t have it so I’m having to look elsewhere but so far no luck. You know that I wish? That I could get a hold of someone at the Nickelodeon Network and have them send some over for the fan meet.
