This will be a very short post but it is definitely one of my favorites so far.

On Wednesday, September 5, 2012 I posted my second Classic Nick Wednesday article which was simply called “Pinwheel” where I discussed the history of one of Nickelodeon’s main programs which I also blogged. For anyone who grew up watching Pinwheel the name George James will be very familiar to you; he played “Jake” on Pinwheel. He was the resident singer and musician. Yesterday when I checked my email I almost screamed when I read this email. Yes you are reading it correctly, “Jake” emailed me and I am VERY honored to share his email with you.

Good Afternoon Mr. James,

Thank you so much for your wonderful email, I’m so honored that you have read my blog and that you approve of it, I just can’t tell you how much that means to me. It has taken me several years, and countless hours of research, to be able to maintain my Yahoo group, website, Facebook pages/groups and blog all in an effort to preserve the memories of the early to mid-80’s Nickelodeon programs. In a way I consider myself an advocate for Classic (80’s) Nickelodeon.

Ya know this may sound a bit strange but I was getting ready to send out a search party for you. Every week in the Sunday paper I see the Parade or the American Profile magazines and at least once a month I think about writing them to ask them about you. What have you been up to lately, how you got involved with Pinwheel and so forth? I did write to one of them about a year ago to ask who took over the role of Coco the Mime after C.C. Loveheart left but never received an answer. Many of us believe it was Lindanell Rivera but there is no way to confirm it other than Wikipidia and to be honest I think someone found that on one of my sites and posted it.

Mr. George, if I may be so bold, may I ask you something? Well, two somethings actually.

1) May I have your autograph?

2) My friend Andy, from Facebook, interviewed Ms. Loveheart for my blog and I was wondering if we may ask you for one as well? It’s okay if you say no but it never hearts to ask.

Thank you again for your email, it truly made my whole week and thank you also for giving me your phone number. I would love to call you but to be honest I’m afraid I would be too excited and my words would come out in a jumble. (I know that sounds a bit silly.) Besides, I’m a writer and I sound much better on paper, or at least for now I do.

Have a wonderful weekend and thank you for such wonderful memories when I was growing up. I was about twelve when I started watching Pinwheel but my Mom babysat so I’d watch with the kids and in all honesty I loved it myself they were just an excuse for me to watch J.

Great to get your email and sorry for the delayed response.

Your advocacy and understanding of the early days of Nickelodeon is impressive and heartwarming. You seem to have grasped the well-meaning intentions of the people who took pride in producing "Pinwheel" and the other early programs on "Nickelodeon". It was certainly something that I took much pride and joy in and remains a bright spot in my life. The fact that you value and are promoting the spirit of those early programs is commendable, as they were indeed for and about people. The traveling that I did with the Pinwheel Road Show gave me a chance to actually meet the smiling faces that came to know and love us via the show. To have our intentions confirmed in person was and will always be among the most meaningful experiences of my life.

I can confirm that Lindanell Rivera was indeed the second mime on the show after CC Loveheart. Both were a pleasure to work with. As for your two questions, I would be happy to send you an autograph. Somewhere I have a few promotional pictures which after I find them I will send you one. I will of course need an address to send it to. I will also be happy to to partake in Andy's interview. It will be fun to credit many and make clear some of the fuzzy areas that may exist if I can. I was involved in "Pinwheel" from the development stage so I have knowledge of most that went on.

Since "Pinwheel" I have been involved in many things including writing for "Sesame Street", producing, directing and traveling.

I feel that you truly enjoy what you are doing, and that of course is the key to doing something well.

This 1985 classic musical version of "Jack And The Beanstalk" is hosted by Lucie Arnaz and stars the critically acclaimed First All Children's Theater which consists of more than 30 singing and dancing gifted young performers including a very young Ben Stiller (yes movie star Ben Stiller – that’s him in the red cloak on the left) as The Giant.

The First All Children’s Theater was the first children’s theater to ever receive a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. As Lucie Arnaz says, the First All Children’s Theater is “exciting” and “exhilarating” and “a very special place.” TV critic Kay Garbella of the New York Daily News said of Clever Jack, “It’s a romp. Youngsters will love it.”

I’ve been thinking about yall lately and realized that I’ve been so busy with stuff lately that I haven’t had a chance to post anything to you and I’d like to apologize for that so I’ve pulled out an oldie but a goodie.

A few years ago I posted a “You Know You’re Addicted To Classic Nickelodeon When...” list that I thought deserved a new posting both here in email and to the blog. So I’ve tracked down that old post * and added some new stuff to it, new posts are at the bottom of the list in blue, and I’m reposting it to you in hopes that you will enjoy it and want to add to it.

* You go on Facebook and search for all your favorite CN shows then join every page and fan group you can find for it.

* When you can’t find a page or group for your particular show you start your own.

* You spend hours on eBay and iOffer hunting down your favorite CN shows.

* When you can’t find what you want you start hunting down private collectors and buy your shows through them. (I have done this several times and it was worth it!)

* You create a list like this to celebrate in your obsession!

* You start a CN Yahoo group, website and Facebook page / group.

* You still write fan letters to your favorite CN stars.

* While watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade you start to wonder what a CN parade would look like then start designing the floats and giant balloons. (Guilty)

* Every year on Halloween you dress up like your favorite CN character / cartoon.

* To celebrate Half-O-Ween in May (like Christmas in July) you dress up like your favorite CN character / cartoon.

* You hang out at or ride every roller coaster named in “Wild Rides” hoping that you’ll run into Matt Dillon.

* You wonder if Smitty is still looking for the Admiral Byrd.

In the dream it took a little while to get to the Nickelodeon part so I’ll skip right to that.

Somehow I had been lost in another city and managed to get a cell phone and eventually I wound up back at my Mom’s house. The phone rings and my dad answers it and they ask for me. When I said hello it was the producer from Double Dare and even though it was someone else’s phone that I had swiped (I never steal IRL but I was desperate in this dream) he was asking for me by name!!!

He told me that he had heard about my Nickelodeon Fan Meets and was asking me all about them and it sounded like he was interested in coming to the next one! How cool is that?! Now if I could just figure out IF I’m going to have another one that would be even cooler.

Anyway I just wanted to share that with yall b/c I thought it was really cool.

Black Beauty

Hey yall,

I wanted to let you know that the Family Net (channel) is now airing “The Adventures of Black Beauty” EVERYDAY at 2PM central time. This is wonderful news for all of us fans since they’ve only been showing it from 1-3AM every Sunday morning. Now it will be back on in the afternoon the way it was when it aired on Nickelodeon from the very early to mid 1980’s.

If you haven’t seen this classic is well worth your time to get acquainted with the series. In these modern times when children are out of control and no one wants to “get involved” this series brings back the old fashion values that parents want their children to learn as well as teaching them that helping their neighbor is a good thing.

The original Black Beauty aired from 1972-1974 in England on ITV and aired in the United States from the early to mid 1980’s. Then in 1990 a new series emerged, “The New Adventures of Black Beauty” aired from 1990-1991 and was a continuation of the 1970's series.

The 1970’s series was not an adaptation of the book by Anna Sewell, but a "continuation" featuring new characters created by Ted Willis, most prominently Dr James Gordon, played by William Lucas, and his children Vicky, played by Judi Bowker (who became Jenny, played by Stacy Dorning, in the second series) and Kevin, played by Roderick Shaw. Other writers included David Butler and Richard Carpenter, while directors included Charles Crichton and Peter Duffell. The series, which was filmed mainly at Stockers Farm, Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, was widely acclaimed for its high production values and quality of writing and acting, and at times had remarkable English gothic overtones for a children's series. “The Adventures of Black Beauty” featured two of the characters from the original series, Dr James Gordon (played by William Lucas) and Jenny Gordon Denning (played by Stacy Dorning). The series was shown on ITV in the United Kingdom. Two seasons were produced, with 24 episodes being made in total and currently (also) airs on the Family Net (channel). The second season featured an entirely new story arch, which did not relate back to the original series the way the first season did.

Which ever episodes they start showing this week (at 2PM central time) will very much be worth watching and it’s a great way for the 80’s kids, like me, to relive their childhood memories! Hope you’ll be watching!!!

***Under the Mountain***

For those of you who have The Movie Channel East (TMCe) they are going to show the remake of The Third Eye classic “Under the Mountain” Thursday morning, 7:45 AM Central Standard time, check your time zone for the exact time.

Right now you can find the original “Under the Mountain” on YouTube for a refresher before you see the new movie (or after). I have seen this new version and it’s awesome, it’s very much a tribute to the original and I was on the edge of my seat though out the whole movie.

There are some small changes here and there, the opening is different and Mr. Jones has some new powers that he didn’t original have and the twins are at least 3-5 years older but it’s sooo good; really I just can’t say enough about this awesome remake.

The night this had come on one of the Starz channels and I found out that I had JUST missed it on TV (literally the credits were just rolling past the screen!) I ran out and bought it, went and picked up my Mom and came home and popped it in. And what was so cool was that I had taken the original to her house one day and we watched the whole thing together so naturally I wanted her with me when I watched the remake. Needless to say we had the best time watching this together.

For fans of the original “Under the Mountain” I HIGHLY recommend this movie!!!

Since the last two fan meets have fallen though I’ve been discouraged thinking that it will never happen but maybe that’s not necessarily the case.

As you all know I live in Altus, OK and I have a friend who lives in Chickasha, OK, which is about three hours from me. We started talking the other day on Yahoo Messenger and thought that instead of a big huge proper fan meet like I was planning what about if we started A LOT smaller so here’s what we came up with.

Hold a “mini fan meet”, as we’re calling it, in Lawton, OK and just have it at a hotel room instead of like a proper banquette room. Everyone can just get their own room (downstairs if possible, I love yall but I have a very bad back and I don’t want to have to climb stairs for two days), she’s bringing a VCR/DVD player and I’m bringing the videos and DVDs and we’ll all just hang out in someone’s room and watch the old shows together. That way there’s no cost for a banquette room or tickets just the price of your room and food and we can all order pizza and I can take some microwave popcorn, someone can run to the store for soda or tea and just be very informal and hang out.

So what do yall think? Would any of you be interested in something like that as apposed to how I was doing it before? Also if you would like a list of the programs that I have to take with me for us to watch please let me know and I’ll post it to the you personally or on the list of whom ever asks me.

MY FIRST TIME ON TV – WHAT A SKIVER!

“My first break into television came when I was 15 and was offered the lead role in LWT’s series Black Beauty.

Although it was what every little girl dreamed of, I wasn’t desperate in the least to become an actress. In fact, I’d done a bit of acting before and had sworn I’d never do it again!

Five years before, when I was just 10 years old, I’d had a part in the film Cromwell with Richard Harris and had absolutely hated it!

I thought it was a very silly way to earn a living, and I had found it dreadfully uncomfortable, with a dress that was too tight and those horrid hot lights that made me feel like I was going to faint!

I’d heard of suffering for my art, but this was ridiculous!

After that experience, I decided showbiz was not for me, and put my energies into becoming a nurse. I studied very hard at school to get the right qualifications, until the school took us to a hospital where I saw terminally ill children and elderly people in the geriatric ward. I knew then that I wouldn’t be able to make it as a nurse, so it was back to the drawing board. I was very depressed about it, and thoroughly confused.

Then out of the blue, my mother, who was also an actress, got a call from her agent who said that the producers of Black Beauty were looking for a teenage girl to take over the lead role in the series, and he thought I would be perfect.

I went to see LWT on Thursday, mainly because I wanted to skive off school for the day. By the following Monday I was at the farm in Richmansworth and the very next day I was told I had the part, and was to start filming 10 days later! It was all so sudden that I didn’t really have time to think about what was going on.

There was only one slight problem though – I didn’t know how to ride a horse, so the next week and a half before filming started were spent in the saddle with loads of padding under my bottom, desperately learning how to ride so that hopefully I would look like a professional.

My initial fear of horses soon left me, and although I was stiff and bruised I couldn’t wait to get back in the saddle.

I did nine months of filming and it was one of the happiest times of my life. Everyone I worked with on the series was absolutely lovely.

It was totally different to the filming Cromwell, and all the aspects I had hated about filming that weren’t there when I was filming Black Beauty. Firstly, Beauty was mainly on location so there were none of those horrid studio lights, and my costume was much more comfortable!

Needless to say, the acting bug really hit me, and I’m afraid I never gave nursing another thought!”

How To Make A Gumby Costume

With St. Patrick’s Day just around the corner it’s only fitting that the Classic Nickelodeon Fan Blog post something…well…green. So in honor of St. Pat’s here are your instructions on “How To Make A Gumby Costume”.

Now I must admit that I have never attempted this myself if you read this and make it please send me your pictures and I’ll post them!!! How To Make A Gumby Costume

Introduction

This cute television icon seems like a good candidate for a Halloween costume, but Gumby is actually an ambitious choice. For a complete Gumby, the costume will cover the entire body, and it might take awhile to get using to walking inside of it. Nevertheless, there are always different ways to go based on degrees of authenticity.


Things You'll Need
Styrofoam sheets
Glue
Exacto knife or scissors
Green craft paint


Step One - Get Styrofoam sheets. For an authentic Gumby costume, Styrofoam is the best, You'll want a sheet at least as tall as the person who will wear the costume, and several feet wide, enough to cut out limbs and spare pieces.

Step Two - Cut out the body, arms, and legs. You can use an exacto knife or even scissors, but you'll probably need to hold the material down as you cut, or it will be too hard to cut through.

Step Three - Lay out the pieces so you know what goes where. You'll want two of each piece, a front and a back.

Step Four - Glue pieces together. Experts recommend a PVA glue like Weldbond, but with the disclaimer that PVAs need pressure to bond. You can use heavy objects to pressure the Styrofoam pieces while they dry, or you can go with a lighter glue that bonds without pressure.

Step Five - Let pieces dry.

Step Six - Paint them green. Use craft glue that is found at a craft or hobby store.

Step Seven - Add features such as mouth and googly eyes. You can use any kind of material for the eyes.

Tips & Warnings
Make sure your Gumby costume is properly ventilated. Design a hole for breathing and two holes for eyes. Also, make sure any fumes from the glue have dissipated before putting the costume on.

Coco on L&O: Criminal Intent

C.C. Loveheart who played the original Coco the Mine on Pinwheel from 1979-1981 will be on Law & Order: Criminal Intent tonight. The episode entitled “D.A.W.” will air on the Oxygen Network and will be on twice this evening. C.C. plays the secretary of a doctor who is murdering his patients. I’m inclosing a picture of her so that yall will recognize her when you see her.

Merry Christmas everyone. I thought you all might get a kick out of this “12 Days of Classic Nickelodeon” song that I wrote over the summer when I was getting ready for the fan meet. T’was the night before Christmas and all around TIM,
Not a creature was stirring as he hummed a soft hymn;
The AE suits hung in the darkroom with care,
In hope that no aliens would come calling there;

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of hyperspace danced in their heads;
And Liz in her nightdress and John all in white,
Had just settled down to sleep for the night.

When out in the Lab there arose such a clatter,
John jaunted at once to see what was the matter.
Away to the stun guns he flew like a flash,
Tore open the holster and threw up the catch.

The light of TIM's balls on the table below
Gave the banks of equipment a strange, eerie glow,
And then, to his wide-eyed amazement, he saw.
A tall, bearded man appeared by the door.

With thoughtful eyes, and robes so sublime,
John knew in a moment 'twas a Guardian of Time.
From an unknown dimension this stranger so tall,
He whistled, and shouted, and called to them all;

"Now, Michael! Now, Carol! Now, 'Lizbeth and John!
Come, Tyso! And Stephen! Where ever you've gone!
Andrew, and Hsui Tai come answer my call,
There's work to be done to the Trig with you all!"

With belts haphazardly slung round their waists
The long-distance jaunt they made with all haste.
Far across space to the Galaxy's end,
TIM 'pathed a good-luck to all his dear friends.

And then, in a twinkling, they materialized.
Sighed with relief, and looked round in surprise.
John crossed his arms to calm himself down.
"Let's get on with business," he said, with a frown.

Approaching them now, with arms open wide,
His robes luminescent, his eyes full of pride;
A bundle of presents he held with TK,
They relaxed in an instant, no jaunting away.

Chairbeing Timus didn't mean to seem rude.
He counted their number then looked on confused.
"There's somebody missing," he cried, after a time
"Kenny's back home, we left him behind."

Timus' eyes -- how they twinkled so merry!
His cheeks were all flushed, his nose like a cherry
His manner was cheery, his speech was quite slurred
To find Timus drunk seemed quite absurd.

"Apologies friends", he then called loud and hearty
"I've imbibed too much wine at the Trig's Christmas party."
"It was Peter's idea to bring you all here."
"Don't look so shocked, there's nothing to fear."

"No villains to thwart, no planets to save."
"You don't need to fret, don't look so grave."
And they laughed when they heard this, in spite of their anger;
Dragged from their beds, expecting real danger.

John smiled at his friends, as he waved them away
"The joke was on us." Was all he could say.
And they all fell about in hysterical mirth
Preparing to teleport back down to Earth.

The bundle of presents appeared at their feet.
With gift-wrap and tinsel all tidy and neat.
"A gift for each TP." Timus replied.
As the vortex of color swirled in their eyes
And they heard him exclaim, as he faded from sight,
"HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD-NIGHT!"
