Classic Nick Wed.– History of Nickelodeon

As an advocate for Classic (80’s) Nickelodeon I’d like to give you a brief history of Nickelodeon from my perspective as a First Generation Nickelodeoner.

I started watching Nickelodeon back in 1979 when it was still known as the “Pinwheel Network” and, while I don’t remember a lot of the shows I do remember that there was a commercial with an old fashion nickelodeon machine where I man looked over into the “N” and watched a little film much like the man in this picture. (Or it might have been a real machine – hard to remember I was only nine or ten at the time.) Anyway the song that played over it was, “Music Music Music” by Teresa Brewer. A year later in 1980 the network re-launched as “Nickelodeon: The First Network For Kids” and the rest is history.

That may sound kind of funny to us today but in 1950 that was a big hit for her and as it turned out was just right for the budding television network. So what aired back in the good old days of the Pinwheel / Nickelodeon Network? Here is a list of as many shows as I could find. Do you remember any of these, and if so which ones?

Special Delivery – Children of the Stones

Children of the Stones originally aired on the United Kingdom's ITV Network in January and February 1977 and became a part of Classic Nickelodeon when the network aired it as part of their anthology series “The Third Eye”.

In the series opener we meet astrophysicist Adam Brake and his young son Matthew as they arrive in the small village of Milbury, which is built in the midst of a megalithic stone circle.

The main premise of the show was that the small village of Milbury exists within a stone circle, reminiscent of Stone Hedge, where they were stuck in a time rift where the same events unfold every time the time circle resets with only minor variations occurring each time. Then when the power of the circle fails to be released to the outside world it resets and the same events attempt to unfold again.

As Adam Brake and his son Matthew attempt to make establish a life for themselves in their new surroundings they begin to notice something very odd about their new neighbors. One day they are normal functioning people and the next they seem to be in a fog, distant and detached from everything and everyone around them expect from their fellow “Happy Dayers”.  By this time it seems that the only other people who have not been affected by the strange phenomenon are the museum curator Margaret and her daughter Sandra.

During this time we discover that Matthew has psychic abilities and had only the year before come across a painting, which depicted the scene of the first circle with a beam of light in the middle to the circle. While attempting to discern the meaning of the painting Matthew meets Dai, the village poacher, who seems to know more than people think he does.

When Margret and Sandra eventually fall under the spell of the “Happy Dayers” Adam and Matthew know they must work quickly to break the spell or fall victims to The Circle themselves.

Currently, the serial is available on DVD, released by Second Sight in the UK and by Acorn Media in the US. The DVD includes interviews with actor Gareth Thomas and producer Peter Graham Scott. The series was released yet again in 2011 by Network DVD.

Special Delivery – Sound of Music

It’s been over 50 years since Julie Andrews twirled on an Austrian hill top to proclaim that “the hills are alive with the sound of music.” To celebrate the historic anniversary, ABC’s Diane Sawyer took a trip to Austria with Andrews to revisit where the iconic film was shot. “The Untold Story of The Sound of Music” visited old filming locations and allowed viewers to walk down memory lane as Andrews told stories about what it was like to create a film that has become a worldwide phenomenon. Special Delivery – Mrs. 'Arris Goes to Paris

For those of you who may be looking at this title and wondering if it could have been a Nickelodeon Special Delivery rest assured, it was not. One of the goals I have with this blog is to provide clean family friendly entertainment both in the ‘80’s music videos and Special Deliveries that I post. Most of the SDs are indeed taken from the early days of Nickelodeon’s history but others, like this one, were but they still hold to the standards I have for this blog. That being said I hope that you will enjoy this film.

The plot revolves around Ada Harris, who is so enchanted by her employer's couture wardrobe that she becomes determined to go to the House of Dior in Paris to purchase an evening gown of her own. She cuts every corner she knows how to cut but does she make it to Paris? Will she have her own Dior dress and if so will she be allowed to keep it?
