Classic Nick Wednesday – Hedgehog Cookies

There’s still time for you to whip up these adorable hedgehog cookies for your Thanksgiving feast tomorrow. These cute little guys remind me of the Pinwheel Cartoon “Emily” and her hedgehog Humphrey.

Ingredients

⅓ cup butter, softened

¼ cup confectioners' sugar

⅔ cup all-purpose flour

⅔ cup ground hazelnuts

Pinch salt

½ cup milk chocolate chips

¼ cup crushed toffee candy

½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Directions

1) Preheat oven to 325°. In a small bowl, cream butter and confectioners' sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in vanilla. Combine flour, hazelnuts, and salt; gradually add to creamed mixture and mix well. Shape 1 tablespoon of dough into a ball; pinch the dough to form a face. Repeat. Place 2 in. apart on a greased baking sheet.

2) Bake 12-15 minutes or until lightly browned. Let stand 5 minutes before removing to a wire rack to cool completely.

3) In a microwave, melt chocolate; stir until smooth. Holding a hedgehog cookie by the nose, spoon chocolate over the back (leave the face uncovered). Allow excess to drip off. Place on waxed paper; immediately sprinkle crushed toffee onto the wet chocolate to look like hedgehog spikes.

4) With a toothpick dipped in chocolate, make two eyes and a dot on the nose. Let stand until set. Store in an airtight container.

Now that Autumn is here, and the air is crisp wouldn’t it be fun to bake these awesome Hedgehog Cookies with your kids on Saturday afternoon just before you sit down as a family to watch some Classic Nickelodeon?

They remind me of my favorite Pinwheel Cartoon Emily (Emilie) by Domitillede Pressensè. Emily had a pet hedgehog named Humphrey and I these cookies are as cute as he was.

Classic Nick Wed. – Sightings

Today’s Classic Nickelodeon Wednesday is a bit different. For the last few months I’ve had a few Classic Nickelodeon sightings and I wanted to share them with you. Hope you enjoy them.

As I was cleaning out my spare bedroom I found an old 16 Magazine from 1985. As I flipped through it I found the address page and low and behold, I found an address to write to Alasdair Gillis from You Can’t Do That On Television!

Before Tomorrow People fans knew Trevor Bannister as “Colonel Masters” he was already well known on the hit television series Are You Being Served? Where he played “Mr. Lucas” Here he is with fellow co-star John Inman preforming “Mammy.” Who knew the Colonel was so well coordinated?

Curious George has been around for a long time and if you watched Pinwheel in the ‘80’s then chances are you saw George as a Pinwheel Cartoon. In October I happened to notice this sign in the electronics department in Walmart. George is such a cutie!

Last Friday while I was out of town for a doctor's appointment I took a stole through Target and noticed this guy on one of the 4-way shelves in the electronics department.

'90's kids may remember the night Nickelodeon aired Puf-a-Palooza, an all night marathon of the wold and crazy worlds of Sid and Marty Krofft. While going through some old newspapers I ran across this article about H.R. Pufnstuf appearing on the Nickelodeon show Mutt & Stuff.

About two weeks ago while I was in Walmart I happen to look over at the TVs by the door and noticed they were showing Hey Arnold. How could I NOT take a picture of that?!

As you all know, Paddington Bear aired during Pinwheel making it a Pinwheel Cartoon as I like to call them. While I was in the dollar store I happened to notice this DVD set of Paddington Bear DVD.

What's Nickelodeon without Slim?! Personally I prefer the real stuff, as seen on You Can't Do That On Television, but for today's modern kids who's never seen the show this will have to do. Still, it does look fun don't cha' think?

So, you’re probably asking what does a unicorn in a pen have to do with Nickelodeon right? Three Nickelodeon Special Deliveries, namely, Alex and the Wonderful “Doo Wah” Lamp, Big Apple Birthday and The Stowaway where part of a two volume VHS anthology series collectively known as Unicorn Tales. In the opening title of the videos is a unicorn in a pen kicks the fence then jumps over it and runs away. Here is the coloring book and a screenshot of Unicorn Tales.

For the last few days I’ve been in the mood to watch the old “Emily” cartoons they use to show during Pinwheel which use to air on #Nickelodeon. So just by chance I typed in “Emilie,” b/c I know that it was a French cartoon that had been adapted to English, and this is what I found. Apparently she has a whole youtube channel!

Paddington Bear - 'Collector's Edition' Combines '70s Show and '90s Show on DVD!

3-disc set from Mill Creek will be out in late November, a month before the new film hits theaters!

Back in 2011, we told you how Mill Creek Entertainment was releasing a couple of DVD sets with the original 1975 stop-motion animated series of Paddington Bear. We also reminding you at the time how the cartoon version of The Adventures of Paddington Bear, which aired in the '90s, had already been on DVD since 2002. Now, with the new Paddington motion picture coming to theaters on Christmas Day 2014, the folks at Mill Creek are putting together a special new release of Paddington Bear - Collector's Edition, with both TV shows together!

I’m sorry that I haven’t been posting weekly like I use to. For those who don’t know I’ve been taking a writing course and I had an assignment due the first weekend in November but I wasn’t able to turn it in on time so I had to get an extension and even then it was late. Classic Nick Wed. – Simon in the Land of Chalk Drawings

This simple classic 5-minute cartoon program was produced in the early 1970s by FilmFair Productions in London for Thames Television and was based on the writings of Edward McLachlan that was originally broadcast around teatime in Britain. In America children fell with Simon and his chalk drawing friends when they were featured on Captain Kangaroo where it was narrated by Bob Keeshan instead of Bernard Cribbins; it also aired on Nickelodeon’s Pinwheel, and after that, on Romper Room. In Canada it was narrated by Ernie Coombs and shown on CBC Television, while the Ontario public network, TVOntario, aired the original British version.

The show centers around a boy named Simon who has a magic chalkboard, magic in that whatever he draws on the chalkboard become real in "The Land of Chalk Drawings". Almost everyday Simon climbs over a fence near his home with a ladder to visit his friends in the land of chalk including his chalk-drawn friend Henry. Stories often revolve around the unintended effects that Simon's drawings have on the Land of Chalk Drawings, such as when an upset Simon draws a picture of his angry self, which proceeds to go on a rampage and various other adventures.

A new version, currently being broadcast on Teletoon, features a new theme song, an updated outfit for Simon, blue and white colors in Simon's home world, and replaces his friend Henry with a new friend, a girl named Lily. In this new version, Simon wears a striped T-shirt, shorts and trainers, instead of a necktie.

The series was later parodied on NBC's Saturday Night Live by Mike Myers, however unlike the British series, the SNL sketches took place in Simon's bathtub, in which Simon shows, and discusses, drawings that correlate with his life.

Simon is also an award users can build on the popular Internet game BrokenPictureTelephone. It is awarded to users by other users who feel the drawer has the drawing skills of a 4 year old.

Classic Nick Wed. – 16– La Linea

La Linea, or “The Line", as it is pronounced in English was an award winning Italian animated series created by cartoonist Osvaldo Cavandoli which was originally broadcast on the Italian channel RAI between 1971 and 1986, and consists of 90 episodes, each about 2–4 minutes long. The series has aired in more than 40 countries around the world including the United States when it aired on Pinwheel as one of their animated shorts which it was widely known for.

The cartoon features a man, known as "Mr. Linea", who is drawn as a single outline around his silhouette, walking on an infinite line of which he is a part. As Mr. Linea walks along the line he encounters different obstacles that he has trouble overcoming. At that point he would turn to the cartoonist, which is represented as a live-action hand holding a white grease pencil, and mutters something along the lines of a complaint in gibberish.  At this point, the artist will come in and draw something involving the oddity that Mr. Linea would then interact with but he artist was rather sadistic though, as the cartoons always turn out badly for the main character. The mock version of Milanese that resembled gibberish gave the cartoon the possibility to be easily exported without dubbing.

The length of this animated short usually ran in two minutes thirty seconds per episode although some four-minute episodes were also made and was accompanied by a background tune created by Franco Godi.

DVD Releases

A set of three DVDs containing all the episodes was released in Germany in 2003 and re-edited in September 2008. The first volume was released in France, Hungary, Serbia and Scandinavia. A set of two DVDs containing 56 episodes is sold in Quebec since 2008 by Imavision. The complete series was released in Scandinavia in the beginning of 2008 in a 3-disc box set.

Classic Nick Wed. 14 – Emily

One of the most unique characteristics about Pinwheel is that it featured many different types of animated shorts. There was stop-motion animation; the most notable were the Building Blocks sequences. Claymation such as Hattytown Tales and Gumby and traditional animation such as Emily, or Émilie as she is known in France, was created by French author and illustrator Domitille de Pressensè the mid-1970s when she was in the forth year of School of Fine Arts. In America we know Émilie as Emily, a French cartoon that aired on Pinwheel.

The stories take place in the daily life of the little girl and are representative of a little girl's life of 5-6 years whose design style is simple and minimalist. The cartoon follows the adventures of Emily, a little girl who wears only red, a red dress, shoes, and hat but at times her gloves are green. She has an brother named Stephen who wears blue overalls and a little sister Beth who’s name varies according to country. Other names for Emily’s sister are Pat and in France her name is Elise. She also has a pet hedgehog named Humphrey in the English version, Arthur in other versions.

Other characters include the series include her cousins Alexander, who wears a green jumper with knee-pads, and Nicholas who wears red shorts and green sweater and her English friends Grégory and Chloe who wears blue as well as William her who wears yellow overalls and Sydney  who has curly hair.

An English studio adapted the cartoon from the books, whose simple but expressive illustrations are focused on 4-7 year olds. These red books were published at G.P  in 1978 and then republished in the Orange and Blue collection from 1985-1987, in the Red and Gold (1989-1992) and finally in the Pocket Jeunesse edition (1994-1999).

The books are also available on CD via Antenna 2 featuring the voice of Jackie Berger. There are not currently any VHS or DVDs of the series available.

The Peruvian bear who landed at Paddington Station actually can trace his origins to Newbury, the birthplace of his creator Michael Bond. Now, the little bear is donning his duffle coat and heading to the town's racecourse for a special party. 

Paddington Bear hails from darkest Peru, never goes anywhere without his duffle coat and hat, is a bit accident prone and is very fond of marmalade.

The little bear, one of the most popular characters in children's literature, is the creation of Michael Bond, who was born in Newbury on January 13, 1926.

Now, the bear is celebrating his 50th anniversary by visiting Newbury Racecourse to hold a special teddy bear's picnic at the annual Family Fun Day on Sunday 3 August.

Children are invited to bring along their favourite teddy bear and share some of Paddington's favourite marmalade sandwiches.

But what are the origins of this world famous bear?

Michael Bond was educated at Presentation College in Reading. During his time as a BBC cameraman he landed on the idea of Paddington Bear after he bought his wife a bear toy.

"I bought a small toy bear on Christmas Eve 1956. I saw it left on a shelf in a London store and felt sorry for it. I took it home as a present for my wife Brenda and named it Paddington as we were living near Paddington Station at the time.

"I wrote some stories about the bear, more for fun than with the idea of having them published. After ten days I found that I had a book on my hands. It wasn't written specifically for children, but I think I put into it the kind things I liked reading about when I was young."

His first book, A Bear Called Paddington, was published in October 1958 and Bond went on to write a whole series.

By 1967 his books were so successful that that he was able to give up his job with the BBC in order to become a full-time writer.

"The great advantage of having a bear as a central character is that he can combine the innocence of a child with the sophistication of an adult.

"Paddington is not the sort of bear that would ever go to the moon - he has his paws too firmly on the ground for that. He gets involved in everyday situations. He has a strong sense of right and wrong and doesn't take kindly to the red tape bureaucracy of the sillier rules and regulations with which we humans surround ourselves. As a bear he gets away with things. Paddington is humanised, but he couldn't possibly be 'human'. It just wouldn't work."

The Paddington books have sold more than thirty-five million copies worldwide and have been translated into over forty languages.

In 1997 Michael Bond was awarded to OBE for services to children's literature. He is married with two adult children and lives in London, not far from Paddington Station.

C/N Thanksgiving Sightings

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Can you believe that next month is Christmas?! Where has the time gone?

So by the time you read this is will be Thanksgiving day and I’m SOOO very sorry that I’m only just now getting this out to you but I wanted to let you know of an upcoming Classic Nickelodeon (C/N) sighing that will be in the McDonald’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on WGNA network.

In the past few years this parade has featured the costumed characters of Paddington Bear and Curious George as well as giant balloon characters of the same. Both of these were cartoons shown during Pinwheel, they were, as I call them, “Pinwheel Cartoons”.
