Classic Nick Wed – Double Dare Fan Interviews

Your Name?

Were you a contestant or an audience member?
I was an audience member.

Did you have to fill out an application? If so, do you remember any of the questions?
I don't remember having to fill out anything, though having been only 8 years old at the time, I'm not sure if my parents had to fill out anything or not.

Did the show require you to be a certain age to participate?
I don't think there were age restrictions on audience members, but I think you had to be at least 8 or 9 to be on the show.

Did you get to officially meet Marc Summers? If so what was he like?
I did manage to have a few words with Marc during one of the commercials. He was friendly and down to earth. Also, I don't know if this counts for anything, but I had a direct, one to one phone call with him back in 2010.

How did it feel walking into the studio for the first time? Had you been there before?
Walking into the studio was a surreal, magical experience. I had never been there before.

What is your best memory of being there?
My best memory of being there, besides talking to Marc, was watching the father from the Reilly team get his bald head almost completely covered in a white, batter-like substance, and watching Pick-It sneeze.

Do you have any behind the scenes stories you can share with us?
As only an audience member and not a contestant, I can't really say anything about what goes on behind the scenes.

Any last thoughts?
I do get a tremendous feeling of nostalgia from watching any version of this show, but most especially shows that were taped in Philly, since I've always lived only about 10 miles away from the WHYY studios.

Going back to question five, tell us about this phone call you had with Marc? How is it that you got to talk to him?
Well, I had always hoped to meet him on a more personal level than the fleeting encounter I had with him on the show, since he was one of my most favorite TV people growing up. So, anyway, back when I turned 30, my mom wanted to do something special for my birthday, and she got the idea to try to track down Marc (he was actually in the phone book, believe it or not) and have him as a surprise guest for the big party we had. Unfortunately, with him being very busy with his Food Network show at that time, he wasn't quite able to fulfill that wish, but he did call me on my birthday, and we talked for about 20 minutes. I told him how DD was still something I loved after so many years and told him that I had been to a taping of FDD in 1988, though I don't think he specifically remembered exactly who I was. I also told him about my other game show passion, The Price Is Right, and he mentioned that, back in the early and/or mid-70s, he had been a page or done some type of entry level work behind the scenes for that show.

~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~

Your Name:
Stephanie Hoffman..as a contestant my last name was Gonzales

Were you a contestant or an audience member?
Contestant

Did you have to fill out an application? If so, do you remember any of the questions?
No application, but we did go through this "interview process" along with other candidates.

Some of the questions: what President head is on the penny? How many crayons in a box of 16 count Crayola crayons (seriously that was the question). I can't remember some of the others🤔

Did the show require you to be a certain age to participate?
Yes, 13 was the age.

Did you get to officially meet Marc Summers? If so what was he like?
Just when he first came on the set when we were pre-recording. He came out and action was called, something happened during sound check and he was not happy😐 he threw the mic and told the crew to get it together before he walks out again, kind of weird but after all was set he was happy-go lucky.

How did it feel walking into the studio for the first time? Had you been there before?
Walking into studio was a DREAM come true, actually it was amazing when they handed us the famous tees and Reeboks (I wanted the British Knights). We had never been to the set, there were 11 of us on a family vacation, and when we went through the tour they were showing some potential new obstacles and physical challenges, then that is when they finally asked and announced to everybody that was on the studio tour that they were looking for contestants to film the next day. They were going to hold tryouts the very next day, contestants had to be related because they were shooting for a Celebrity Family Double Dare segment. My cousin and I fit the criteria, so we went ahead and signed up.

What is your best memory of being there?
When they were asking us the interview questions, I remember telling my cousin that we just had to keep smiling no matter what. We had the biggest cheesiest smiles the entire time when they were asking us questions.

Do you have any behind the scenes stories you can share with us?
Apparently, they were expecting 2 celebrities for each team and they ended up asking if there was another family member that could join because they were down to only one celebrity per team, good thing my uncle came to the rescue. Another thing was that all that slime was made of applesauce that had coloring added to it, pretty much everything was edible.

Any last thoughts?
I wish there could be a Double Dare traveling tour haha, Across the state of Texas with a stop in San Antonio at my school campus where I teach.

Here’s What 'Double Dare' Host Marc Summers Is Up To Today

By Chris Snyder, June 9, 2017

Marc Summers hosted Nickelodeon's "Double Dare" for about a decade. The popular kid's trivia show included bizarre — and often messy — physical challenges as well as an elaborate obstacle course. Summers recently performed a one-man stage show about his life that has been turned into a documentary called "On Your Marc," which will premiere this fall at Alamo Drafthouses around the country. We spoke with him about his OCD, what it was like working on "Double Dare," and what people can expect in the new film.

On your mark.
Get Set.
Go!

Hi there. My name is Marc Summers. You may know me from "Double Dare." You may know me from "What Would You Do." Perhaps you watch the Food Network and watched me do "Unwrapped."

But I've been around for a while.

"Welcome to 'Double Dare.' This is the show where we run through a crazy obstacle course, and in the process win 8 fabulous prizes!"

"Double Dare" started on October 6, 1986, in Philadelphia, of all places. They had auditioned 1,000 people in New York, didn't like anybody, moved to LA. I was the first person to audition, and I got the job.

It was fun. We started off doing 4 shows a day, then 5 shows a day, and we got up to 6 shows in one day. Times 5 days, that was 30 shows a week.

The contestants were chosen by a contestant coordinator — such a great name — who worked in Philadelphia. And the thing that made us distinctive, over anything that was on the Disney Channel, was we used real kids. We didn't have the blonde-haired, blue-eyed a perfect child. Our kids had acne, and their hair was messed up. And I think the kids at home related more to the people that we had on our show than anything that was currently running on Disney at that time.

"Answer that question or take the physical challenge."

The big keyword was "physical challenge." You wanted to take a physical challenge, and the kids at home wanted you to take the physical challenge. And then after that, it was going to the obstacle course. You win 8 obstacles in 60 seconds or less, you go to Space Camp.

"On your mark. Get set. Go!"

Favorite physical challenge of all time on "Double Dare" was "Pies in your Pants." There was a catapult over here. You'd put a pie down, you'd shoot it up in the air, somebody had clown pants, and they had to catch 3 pies in their pants in 30 seconds or less.

The one thing that I had trouble with physical challenges, was pet food. You see, if you open up a can of dog food, I pretty much lose it. And so they kept trying to get me to do this physical challenge, and as soon as I walked over to the set, and there was all this dog food, I almost lost it. I puked, almost. And I had to go outside, and they had to change the physical challenge.

So here's the thing I didn't know when I started "Double Dare," is I had this little thing called Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Now mine was about neatness and orderliness, but it was a little bit about staying clean and not getting messy. So here I am, age 34, finally got my first show on television. I didn't know that it involved all this mess.

So people say to me all the time, "Well you must have hated it." I didn't. You know, think about it. I've been around in LA for about 13 years, it was my first real job on television. So I was happy as hell to have it. And so the slime didn't bother me in any way, shape, or form. Now, after the show, did I want to get showered and get that stuff off me? Absolutely.

I think you're always a little OCD if you've had it. So I always say I'm 80 percent cured and 20 percent every now and then it sneaks back into my life. But very rarely.

James Taylor has a line in the song, "Fortune and fame, such a curious game. Perfect strangers call you by name." And that's it. You walk down the street and say "Hey 'Double Dare' guy. Hey Marc Summers! Hey Food Network guy!" So, you never get used to it. I can only tell you, it’s never comfortable.

We were in a restaurant not too long ago, and there was a guy who said, "Well, you remember me?" And I went, "Umm… no." And he goes, "Come on!" And I said, "No." And he goes, "The Bodacious Tatas?" I went, "What's that?" "That was our team name." I said, "Oh, you were on 'Double Dare'?" "Yah." He says,"You don't remember me?" I said, "How old were you?" "11." "How old are you now?" "30." "OK, let me figure that out." "11 to 30, uh yeah, there's a reason I don't remember who the heck…" And he got all bent out of shape. He got all angry with me that I didn't recognize him and the days he was on.

"I'll be asking you a question. If you don’t know the answer and think the other team doesn't have a clue, you can dare them to answer it for double the dollars. But be careful, because you can always double dare them back."

I always wanted to host shows, but I didn't get my first opportunity until I was 34. Prior to that, I was doing theater. I always wanted to be on Broadway, in a show. And one thing leads to another, and I was a stand-up comic, and I was a magician, and I was a game show host, and I was the food guy, and then I got hit with a couple of odd things. One was cancer, and the other one was a car accident, where I broke every bone in my face. So I cheated death twice, and I figured, well, if I'm going to do theater, now is the time.

So I did summer stock about 6 years ago. I played Vince Fontaine in "Grease." And I met a couple of guys who were young up-and-comers on Broadway. And I talked to them about doing a one-man show. And they wrote it for me, and we performed it last year at a place called Bloomington Playwrights Project in Bloomington Indiana. And then we did the Adirondack Theatre Festival. And we're now in conversations to take it around the country and also do it Off- Broadway.

So it involves many aspects of my life, prior to "Double Dare," after "Double Dare," the Food Network, and everything in between.

And currently there is a documentary coming out. It's called "On Your Marc," A little play on words of "Double Dare."

We just made an arrangement with something called Alamo Drafthouse. These guys have the best movie theaters all around the country. And starting in October/November, we're going to launch this documentary that was shot behind the scenes of doing a one-man show and everything in between. So should be very interesting.

Here's a question I get all the time. If they brought "Double Dare" back, would I do it. And the answer is: absolutely. Why not?

We did a 30th Anniversary show that aired last Thanksgiving. It got huge numbers. We did a live Facebook thing. I still do appearances around the country. There's no reason not to.

I did it from '86 to about '96. And then it ran in reruns til about 2000. Somebody else tried it for a short time. Unfortunately, it didn't work out for them.

For whatever reason, I'm always thought of as the guy who hosted that program. There are constant conversations going on about bringing the show back. Will it happen? I don't know.

"When you hear this sound… it means the game is over."

An Autographed Pic From MARC SUMMERS!!!

Check out what FINALLY came on Saturday!!!  Now before anyone goes bonkers asking me how I got this I emailed Mr. Summers the night of the live Double Dare event that was hosted by The Splat back in July. He gave me his assistant’s email and had me get in touch with him. The gentlemen has been very busy and was only now able to send it to me. That being said, I asked him if I was allowed to give out his email address know that all of you would want an autographed photo of your own. His response was:

“They will need to send a self-addressed large envelope to me at:

Ryan Coyne
601 Walnut St
STE 1150w Box 38
Philadelphia, PA 19106”

Keep in mind that this is an standard 8 ½ by 11 photo so the postage on your envelop must accommodate for this. Also, mine was slightly bent b/c the mailman has to put it in my mailbox, if you do not want yours bend you will have to provide cardboard or something to keep it from bending and allow for that in your SASE.

***DISCLAIMER***
IF your photo is damaged or bent no one with the Classic Nickelodeon Fan Blog, the Bring Back Double Dare F/B page, the A New Beginning For Classic Nickelodeon yahoo email group, Mr. Summers or Mr. Coyne is responsible.

Double Dare Week on the Splat!

Hey Guys!

So how many of you watched the LIVED Double Dare stream over at The Splat’s f/b page the other night? I did and thought it was great. I didn’t enjoy contestants (not a fan of “All that”) but all together it was fun to watch. The challenges were great and the obstacle course felt like old times.

That being said this week The Splat television network is airing Double Dare all week! Now, I have Cable One as my provider and they cut the MTV / Nickelodeon package well over a year ago so I won’t be able to watch these but you guys can!

And to help you enjoy it even more Mr. Ben Thompson sent me an email on my “Bring back Double Dare” f/b page. He writes:

Double Dare Game Show coming to San Diego this October!

Nickelodeon Reviving Double Dare For Comic-Con — Exclusive
BY MARC SNETIKER • @MARCSNETIKER

Posted July 6 2016 — 9:00 AM EDT

Nickelodeon’s nostalgia block The Splat is honoring the 30th anniversary of the network’s seminal slime game show, Double Dare, in a big way this summer. Well, Summers.

The network has enlisted original host Marc Summers to return, for the first time in 16 years, to the Double Dare set for a live edition of the game show that’ll dominate one night of San Diego Comic-Con this year.

The show celebrates its 30th anniversary on October 6 and is the network’s longest-running game show, having aired from 1986-1993 in its original run. “Thirty years later, people still stop me on the street every day and tell me playing Double Dare is the one thing they wish they could have done growing up,” Summers says.

Lucky fans at Comic-Con will get to do just that, in a nighttime exhibition on July 22. The event will be streamed live on The Splat’s Facebook beginning at 9:30 p.m. PT, wherein fans will be able to watch the red and blue teams compete in rounds of trivia and a slew of classic physical challenges from Double Dares past: Down the Hatch, the Wringer, the Human Hamster Wheel, and the legendary Double Dare Nose.

The Comic-Con Double Dare event kicks off a week of Double Dare reminiscence hosted by Summers on TeenNick (beginning July 25). The line-up features flashbacks, new Double Dare interstitial moments, coverage of the Comic-Con event, and episodes from all three iterations of the game show (Double Dare, Family Double Dare, and Double Dare 2000).

Nickelodeon’s presence at Comic-Con isn’t just limited to the Double Dare revival. In addition to its daily floor booth activities, the network is plotting a 25-year retrospective of Nickelodeon animation panel for Thursday, July 21 (featuring Hey Arnold! creator Craig Bartlett, Invader Zim’s Jhonen Vasquez, The Fairly OddParents’ Butch Hartman, and Rugrats’ Arlene Klasky); a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles panel on July 22; a women in animation panel celebrating pioneering female cartoon creators on July 22; and a Back to the ‘90s reunion panel featuring the casts of All That and Legends of the Hidden Temple on July 23.
