Eight years later they meet Mr. Jones again in Auckland while they are spending their summer holidays with their aunt, uncle and cousin. It is during this time they learn that Mr. Jones is an alien, sent from another world in a battle against another race of slimy, slug-like beasts / monsters / aliens who strip a planet until it is barren then move on to the next to do the same.

While in their human form these creatures are known as the evil Mr. Wilberforce family who, despite their slug-like form have a keen sense of sight and smell as they spy on Rachel and Theo from across the lake.

Costumes & Stones

With Halloween just around the corner I’d like to share some with you some of the items sent in by our wonderful fans.

These amazing costumes were created by Bianca Gallagher as “Valerie” and Brent Frattini as “Barth” who live in Providence, Rhode Island. Both characters are from one of the most famous Classic Nickelodeon shows ever produced, “You Can't Do That On Television”. Photo used with permission.

Recently I became the new owner of the F/B group “Bring back Double Dare” and discovered this terrific email in the archives!

From: Crystal Rhea
Date: Nov 05, 2013
Hey there- We are presently in second place in the Halloween costume contest. It would be greatly appreciated if you could share or post the link on your facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151760866963129&set=a.10151760866913129.1073741827.251495443128&type=1&theater  We rocked the Double Dare costume Thanks so much in advance!

Now, the title of this blog is “Costumes & Stones.” You’ve seen the costumes, now see the stones!

These awesome pictures were sent to me from my friend Andrew Kerbs who recently, “I visited Avebury England the haunted site of that Nickelodeon miniseries The Third Eye.”  Here is a copy of the email he sent me along with the pictures and all I can say is, he’s a brave man!

Andrew Kerbs 9/10, 7:08pm
Peggy - Here are the pictures of the standing stones at Avebury from that Nick show The Third Eye. Rumor has it one of the stones tries crossing the street. There was a creepy eeriness the day we visited the stones. - Andrew

Thank you to all of you who sent in these wonderful pictures and allowing me to post them. If any of you have pictures of yourself in Classic Nickelodeon costumes or if you’ve visited a famous filming site or perhaps you’ve met some of the Classic Nick stars, created some artwork, fan films, anything that’s family friendly, please don’t be shy about sending them in I’d love to post them for our fans to enjoy! Classic Nick Wed. 13 – Which Nick Shows To Remade?

Today’s Classic Nickelodeon Wednesday will be a little different. Recently I was asked to do an interview in regards to my Classic Nickelodeon Fan Blog ( http://classic-nickelodeon-fan-blog.blogspot.com/ ) and today I am just finishing up my interview questions but I thought one of them might be fun to post here then when Patricia and Kevin post my interview on their blog I will post the link here for all of you to read. (It’s very long, like 8 pages – far too long to post here.
So that being said here is one of my interview questions with my answer then all of you can post your answers after mine. Have fun!!!

Q) Recently I (Patricia Miranda) did a podcast of the top 20 Nickelodeon shows that need to be remade. What shows from Nickelodeon do you want to see remade?

 A) This is such a great question because I had already started thinking about this around 2008 when I first saw H2O Just Add Water. Now these are in no particular order so here we go.

The Third Eye
I totally agreed with you on this one. I think they should either remake the original shows that aired on it or add new ones or both. That being said did you know that Under the Mountain has been remade into a new movie? I’ve seen it; I own it and I love it! It’s a little different than the original with the twins being older and Sam Neill now plays the mysterious “Mr. Jones”. The Wilberforces are back in full force and just for us Classic Fans, Kirsty Wilkinson, who portrayed Rachel Matheson from the original "Under the Mountain" on television, made a cameo appearance in the film as Mr. Jones' Neighbor and Bill Johnson, who portrayed the original Mr. Wilberforce also made a cameo appearance in the film as Mr. Carpenter. I have to admit that even I had to go back and check that one. LOL The one, and pretty much only, problem I have with this new film is that almost every scene with the male cousin he was all over his girlfriend! And I don’t care if it is an update, that kind of behavior was totally uncalled for in this movie especially when it was supposed to be (more or less) a kids movie!!!

I love the charm of The Haunting of Cassie Palmer and Children Of The Stones; I don’t have a problem with bad acting or perhaps a few moments of thin scripting because that’s what makes them classics. I own all four of the original stories, including the Under the Mountain remake and except for Into the Labyrinth, which I didn’t care, for I love them but  I do think that with today’s technology they could all be updated and made even creepier than the originals.

Now here’s my twist to this, I would also like to add new programs to this line up. I think H2O Just Add Water, House of Anubis, The Sarah Jane Adventures and Alien Surf Girls would all fit very well into the creepy style of The Third Eye. In fact that was the very statement I made to my mom when we started watching all of these shows. (Yes she watches all of the same shows I do and she loves them all just as I do. I have such a cool Mom!!!)

Also one quick note, The Witches and the Grinnygog was announced as part of The Third Eye lineup but never aired, it was actually shown as part of the Special Delivery program.

Pinwheel
This long time favorite is a perfect candidate for an update, but not just an update, I think it should be a continuation of the original series. I think all of the new characters should be related to all of the original characters but with one small change. Defiantly bring back an “Aurelia” type character to run Pinwheel House; perhaps her great niece except that she should be a human character not a puppet.

Jake and Kim’s nieces, cousins or even their children could come to stay at Pinwheel house just like their family members before them. (Not have Jake and Kim married to each other but to different people and their children come back.) Just the same as Sal and Smitty’s son with is new wife could come back and revive the old “Daily Noodle” that his parents use to run.

Puppeteers Craig Marin and Olga Felgemacher could easily reimagine new puppets for the show and could recommend others to fill in the other characters. But I think The Muppets should be left completely out of it; this needs to be totally separate from The Muppets organization.

I also think that the cartoon / stop-motion shorts could all be updated and refreshed. I would still want to see traditional animation, very few computer cartoons, and we should defiantly keep all of the various stop-motion animations, “puppettoons”, claymations and all of the building block sequences. They all have such a charm to them and it would be ashamed for a new generation of children to loose out on that.

 Today's Special

Just think of how many new things Jeff could lean in the world today!!!

You Can't Do That On Television

This show screams “update” because again, like Jeff, think about how many new things they’d have to talk about these days! But stick to the “real kids” cast like the original cast was. One of the things I didn't like about the 1990’s version of The Mickey Mouse Club was that the kids were all singers and dancers and I would HATE to see that happen to YCDTOTV. Also, keep the slime thick and lumpy!!! None of that neon green oil that they try to pass off as “slime” these days! – WE WANT OUT REAL SLIME!!!!!

Double Dare & Legends of the Hidden Temple are both perfect for updating but yes keep the “bare bones” of the shows. Update the rooms and the giant props and of course the stories and questions. Find a great host and they’d have it made. Both are still awesome even to this day but they could also stand a little refreshening.

Kids' Writes

I would LOVE to see Mr. Mairs bring back this show on any network. It was so innovative and creative and it really helped children to learn how to use not only their imagination but also their writing and spelling skills. Have the exact same type of set, bring back Mr. Mairs and have a new cast. This show could ABSOLUTELY work for today’s kids and now that we have the Internet kids would be able to email their stories in as well as physically mail them in.

An Out Of Control movie would be fun. The cast could get word that their old studio is about to be torn down so they go back to save it? Hummm, I’ll have to email this to Marty (Schiff who played “Hern Burford”) and see what he and Dave (Coulier) think about it.

The Tomorrow People

Now this is a tricky one since there have already been two updates to this show and a third one has now been scheduled.

The first update came in 1992 and was very unsuccessful. The show had none of the charm of the Original Series (OS) and indeed seemed to go in a totally new direction. The characters were flat and undeveloped, there was no Lab, no Jaunting Belts or Bands, nothing that tied it to the original show and it was canceled after three years.

Big Finish did the second update in a series of Audio Dramas (AD) that were, in my opinion, very successful. They returned to the roots of the show, brought back several of the original characters, brought us new characters and brought us story-lines that were thought provoking. When I listen to my ADs I can “see” the story in my mind and it’s so brilliant. Yes they are a bit edgier but they are so very well written and because of that I didn't mind it. If you are a fan of the OS TP, and if you can find them, I would highly recommend this series.

Now the CW Network has announced another update of this series and it both excites me and terrifies me. I’m excited because if the producers are true fans as they claim to be and will cater to both an old and new audience and if they stay true to the basic story I think it will be wonderful. However the idea of an American network taking over is that they will try to turn it into another teenage soap opera with slutty teenagers (male and female) with no morals, no values and who do nothing more than sleep around and back talk their elders. If the CW follows this route the show will be an epic failure; or at least in my eyes it will be.

Classic Nick Wednesday – Under the Mountain

Our third installment of The Third Eye series takes a look at Under the Mountain, an eight-part television series based on the novel of the same name written by Maurice Gee that first aired in 1981 and was produced by Television New Zealand.

When twins Rachel and Theo Matheson first meet the mysterious Mr. Jones when they are young children lost in the woods near their home.

Mr. Jones begins training the twins as they learn of their emerging psychic abilities and how to use them to defeat the Wilberforces. To aid in their training he give each of them a white stone that changes colors as they twins grow in power. As the series progresses their psychic abilities grow in effectiveness as the twins grow in trust and acceptance of their abilities but it is not without it’s own challenges. Rachel, the more sensitive of the two, accepts the truth of their abilities and is able to grow in power more quickly than her brother Theo who is naturally more of a cynic and often challenged Mr. Jones.

At this point I will post the character descriptions, episode guide, cast list and availability straight from Wikipedia). I’m sorry that it is very long however I do not feel that I can improve on their descriptions.

Characters Based on the original novel by Maurice Gee:

Rachel and Theo Matheson
Two seemingly ordinary fraternal twins who lived in a rural New Zealand town. One day when they were three years old, they had wandered away from their home. While a search party tried to find them, they were met by the enigmatic Mr. Jones who telekinetically kept them warm through the cold evening until they were found. Over the years to follow, they had found that they shared a telepathic link and could read each other's thoughts. Upon meeting Mr. Jones again, eight years later, he reveals the reason for his interest in the twins and their important role in his plan for saving the world from the Wilberforces.

Mr. Jones
The last surviving member of a benevolent alien race. His true form is essentially a living flame: warm, brilliant and without a definite shape. On Earth, however, he takes the form of a kindly old man. As he explains to Rachel and Theo, his race was known as "The People Who Understand" and had developed technology based on their powerful telepathic abilities. Mr. Jones has the ability to teleport, communicate telepathically and project powerful beams of light from his physical self. He had journeyed to Earth with another member of his race with the intention of finding and stopping the Wilberforces. The other member was older and had succumbed to old age before the Wilberforces could be found. Mr. Jones has since searched for twins whose minds are telepathically linked in order to complete the work, which he and his older counterpart had started.

The Wilberforces
A race of symbiotic organisms consisting of a slug-like brain (roughly twice the mass of an adult) and a large worm like body (about the size of a battleship). According to the account given to the twins by Mr. Jones, the Wilberforces originated millions of years ago on a world consisting of seas of mud, which nourished the worm organisms. Threatened with extinction, the Wilberforces resolved themselves to conquering other worlds, using their technology to reform other planet's surfaces into mud in order to thrive and breed. When they had finished using a planet's resources, no life remained on that world. By the time Mr. Jones' world had been visited by them several thousand years ago, the Wilberforces had overtaken one complete spiral arm of the galaxy. Mr. Jones' race succeeded in permanently incapacitating every Wilberforce on every planet they could be found on, including Earth. However, the Wilberforces on Earth had learned to slowly counteract the telepathic weapons of The People Who Understand before being rendered dormant. By the time Rachel and Theo are discovered by Mr. Jones, the Wilberforces have nearly completely awakened.

In Dutch the title is Moddermonsters (Mud Monsters) but also known as De Monsterplaneet (The Monster Planet).

DVD

All eight episodes have been released on one dual-layer region-free (region 0) DVD in New Zealand. For some reason the video format chosen for the DVD was NTSC, while the original production material would have been produced for PAL transmission as that is the standard in use throughout New Zealand and Australia. This makes the DVD unplayable for people with certain older TV sets unable to display NTSC. Picture quality is described on the DVD cover as "subject to quality of dated production source." Audio is mono, but is of an acceptable quality.

2009 movie ‘Under the Mountain' has been adapted into a New Zealand 2009 feature film directed by Jonathan King best known for Black Sheep.

Classic Nick Wed. 8 – Children of the Stones

Children of the Stones originally aired on the United Kingdom's ITV Network in January and February 1977 and became a part of Classic Nickelodeon when the network aired it as part of their anthology series “The Third Eye”.

In the series opener we meet astrophysicist Adam Brake and his young son Matthew as they arrive in the small village of Milbury, which is built in the midst of a megalithic stone circle.

The main premise of the show was that the small village of Milbury exists within a stone circle, reminiscent of Stone Hedge, where they were stuck in a time rift where the same events unfold every time the time circle resets with only minor variations occurring each time. Then when the power of the circle fails to be released to the outside world it resets and the same events attempt to unfold again.

As Adam Brake and his son Matthew attempt to make establish a life for themselves in their new surroundings they begin to notice something very odd about their new neighbors. One day they are normal functioning people and the next they seem to be in a fog, distant and detached from everything and everyone around them expect from their fellow “Happy Dayers”.  By this time it seems that the only other people who have not been affected by the strange phenomenon are the museum curator Margaret and her daughter Sandra.

During this time we discover that Matthew has psychic abilities and had only the year before come across a painting, which depicted the scene of the first circle with a beam of light in the middle to the circle. While attempting to discern the meaning of the painting Matthew meets Dai, the village poacher, who seems to know more than people think he does.

When Margret and Sandra eventually fall under the spell of the “Happy Dayers” Adam and Matthew know they must work quickly to break the spell or fall victims to The Circle themselves.

Availability

Currently, the serial is available on DVD, released by Second Sight in the UK and by Acorn Media in the US. The DVD includes interviews with actor Gareth Thomas and producer Peter Graham Scott. The series was released yet again in 2011 by Network DVD.

Classic Nick Wed. 7 – Into the Labyrinth

To begin our look at the Third Eye series this week I will start with my least favorite show, it is also the show that I remember the least about so I am posting the Synopsis straight from Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia.

Synopsis –
The series was based around the struggle of two timeless, feuding sorcerers – the noble Rothgo (Ron Moody) and the evil Belor (Pamela Salem). Each determined to obtain possession of the Nidus, a magical object of limitless power. The Nidus actually belonged to Rothgo and was the source of his power, but it was stolen by Belor who used her own magic to send it through time and space so that Rothgo would not be able to find it. Without the power of the Nidus, Rothgo would ultimately die.

The first two seasons followed a group of modern-day children (Phil, Helen and Terry) who find Rothgo, almost lifeless, in a labyrinthine cave. Rothgo sends the children through different periods of time to search for the Nidus, which is disguised as a different object in each time period and can only be seen in reflection.

The children arrive at various points of history (the French Revolution, Ancient Greece, English Civil War, etc.), however their attempts are constantly thwarted by Belor who also appears in each time period, and who uses her magic to hurl the Nidus further through time to prevent Rothgo and the children from obtaining it (using her magical incantation, "I deny you the Nidus!" as a bolt of lightning emanates from her fingertips).

Belor cannot actually touch the Nidus whilst Rothgo still lives, and so she can only hope to deny him possession of the artifact until he eventually dies. At the end of the first series, the children locate the Nidus (now in the shape of a sword) and finally manage to outwit Belor and return the Nidus to Rothgo, leaving Belor defeated.

Video/DVD Release

The first series was released on VHS (on two cassettes) in the 1980's. Network DVD released the complete series in a three-disc DVD box set on the 14th July 2008.

Classic Nick Wed.6 – The Third Eye

In the spirit of Halloween this month I will be focusing on the Nickelodeon anthology mini-series known collectively as “The Third Eye” which begin airing on Nickelodeon in January 1983.

This hodgepodge of mini foreign shows consisted of a variety of serials from the UK and New Zealand and included: "The Haunting of Cassie Palmer" (1982),  "Under The Mountain"(1981), "Children of the Stones" (1976), and "Into the Labyrinth" (1981).   Later “The Witches of Grinnygog” was added to this line up however it never aired in this collection and was shown later as a Special Delivery.

What made The Third Eye so unique was that it wasn’t silly, upbeat programs that kids were used to, these shows were.  They were live action, sci-fi / supernatural theme, their strange and somewhat their bizarre nature and unclear target audience made them something of a novelty that hasn't been seen since its time on the Nickelodeon Network. The unifying theme of the show (and hence the name of the title, and opening montage sequence) was that of children with psychic powers.

Before each episode an on-screen announcement would read the following statement: "The following is a science-fiction program, and may contain some startling scenes. This show is intended for older children."

Then we see a room of children all standing in a black room with thin light beams fanned out over the floor. As the camera moves through them we hear: "Somewhere in the crowd, sometimes you find someone very special. Someone who hears the unheard, someone who understands the mystery. Sometimes, there's someone who sees with the third eye!" At that point the camera would stop on a child in the back of the crowd with an eye on his forehead them a series of natural disasters flash by.

And while the person responsible for developing the series for Nickelodeon is unknown its loyal followers have never forgot this short series and still lives in their hearts even to this day, and I should know because I’m one of them.

Starting next week I will begin posting about each series in order from my least favorite right up to Halloween night where I will finish out with my favorite show in this series.

Mini Fan Meet?

BREAKING NEWS – Official Date is July 1-3, 2011, mark your calendars!!!

Since the last two fan meets have fallen though I’ve been discouraged thinking that it will never happen but maybe that’s not necessarily the case.

As you all know I live in Altus, OK and I have a friend who lives in Chickasha, OK, which is about three hours from me. We started talking the other day on Yahoo Messenger and thought that instead of a big huge proper fan meet like I was planning what about if we started A LOT smaller so here’s what we came up with.

Hold a “mini fan meet”, as we’re calling it, in Lawton, OK and just have it at a hotel room instead of like a proper banquette room. Everyone can just get their own room (downstairs if possible, I love yall but I have a very bad back and I don’t want to have to climb stairs for two days), she’s bringing a VCR/DVD player and I’m bringing the videos and DVDs and we’ll all just hang out in someone’s room and watch the old shows together. That way there’s no cost for a banquette room or tickets just the price of your room and food and we can all order pizza and I can take some microwave popcorn, someone can run to the store for soda or tea and just be very informal and hang out.

Would any of you be interested in something like that as apposed to how I was doing it before?

We’re thinking maybe towards the last weekend in July possibly the first weekend in August, still working on the dates. And if it goes well we can do that once a year or more if we get the urge and like I said this way there’s no bothering with tickets or a big banquette room we’ll all just be hanging out enjoying our beloved Classic Nickelodeon.

So what do yall think?

To the TPDIS group – technically this post does seem off topic but since it was going out to several other lists were it was “on topic” I did not put “off topic” in the subject line. Also Nickelodeon showed the OS TP from October 1981 to the mid 1980’s so for most US fans that’s how we discovered the show in the first place. Soooo, if anyone is interested in this please contact me off list or on TP6 or A New Beginning For Classic Nickelodeon email or F/B group/page. Thank you.

To House of 80’s group – This is a “Classic Nickelodeon” fan meet which is focused specifically on the 1980’s so this is on topic for this group.

To Everyone – If you would like a list of the programs that I have to take with me for us to watch please let me know and I’ll post it to the you personally or on the list of whom ever asks me.

House of Anubis – My Review

First I’d like to start off by apologizing for taking so long to get this posted, I actually missed the initial airing of the premier on the first (I was so tired that I fell asleep and missed it!) But thankfully Monday the 10th and Tuesday 11th they re-aired the premier episodes so I was able to watch it from the beginning despite having missed it yesterday. (Wasn’t my fault, had to take my Mom to get her eyes examined and thank you Jesus that it wasn’t cataracts as the first doctor had told her it was.)

Anyway…the show really is as good as I thought it would be, it really is like the old Third Eye episodes that use to air back in the day and since I have all four of the original titles and watched them last year I should know what I’m talking about. Heck, I’ve even got my Mom hooked on it and she said exactly the same thing.

It’s mysterious and a little bit creepy and it really does keep you guessing as to what’s going to happen next. The acting…it is a little flimsy but the fact that it’s so well written really makes up for that. The ONLY thing I don’t like about the show is all that teenage romance garbage. I think Alfie and Amber are totally useless and do nothing to move the story along but then as I said I missed it yesterday and from the description Amber had a big part in discovering one of the clues so perhaps I should hold off judgment on her.

As of right now I think Patricia if my favorite character, she’s passionate and driven to find out that has happened to Joy which I really like however I do think that if she would just give Nina (the American girl right?) half a chance I think she’d find out a lot faster since I think that the two stories will eventually come together.

The commercials for the show are really good, they really make you want to tune in and find out what’s happening next time and the fact that you can follow along online is pretty cool however I do not. Yea, I’ve just got too much going on as always, plus it’s more fun to just watch every night and find out. But while I’m watching it I can’t help but think about The Sarah Jane Adventures and H2O: Just Add Water since I had mentioned once before that they also reminded me of The Third Eye as well and it make me wonder what other show could be added to these three to have the four story arches like in the old days. Anyone have any ideas?

Everyone take care, thank you for reading and if you happen to have Facebook you can now follow this blog though NetworkedBlogs as well.
